The son of a Presbyterian minister, the family eventually settled in New York where the 14-year-old Cleveland interrupted his formal education to help support his family. Grover eventually resumed his studies, practiced law in Buffalo, New York, and attained the posts of Assistant District Attorney, Mayor, and Governor of New York before being elected to the presidency. Cleveland became the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms.

Cleveland was also the only president to get married at The White House. In a lavish ceremony, the 49-year-old president married 21-year-old Francis Folsom, daughter of one of his law partners.

Between terms, the Clevelands moved to New York City where the former president returned to the practice of law. After his second presidential term, the family settled into Westland, a Georgian style mansion in Princeton, New Jersey, purchased for $30,915.00.
