On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox,
Virginia. and A.P. wrote to Emma two weeks later, elated with the Union's
victory and his own plans to return home
and begin teaching. But his letter was also filled with sadness over the
assassination of President Lincoln
.

April 21st 1865
Dear Sister
. . . The City is draped in the sable habiliments of mourning. The death
of the president has cast a gloom over the whole nation. I believe the
assassin is still at
large. . . The President's death will be of no advantage to the Confederacy
. . . No power on earth can save it . . . The [War] is fast approaching
an end. Who dares to say now that the South can never be whipped . . .
?
This morning they started with [the President's] remains for Springfield
Ill. I saw him yesterday. I have a piece of cloth which I will send in
this. It is a piece of the covering of the Bier of President Lincoln.
I wish you to take good care of it . . . for I prize it very highly .
