On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox,
Virginia. and A.P. wrote to Emma two weeks later, elated with the Union's
victory and his own plans to return home
and begin teaching. But his letter was also filled with sadness over the
assassination of President Lincoln
